Responsibilities

This position is to install, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade process control equipment from the distributive control system to the valves.
Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Troubleshoots equipment instrumentation and control systems (DCS) and its associated logic (where the logic can easily be accessed)
  • Calibrates instruments and uses many different instruments to measure temperature, level, pressure and flow
  • Installs and maintains electrical and pneumatic systems
  • Monitors specific equipment (PH)
  • Monitors and replaces pressure relief valves and rupture discs
  • Monitors plant areas for the presence of combustibles (sniffing)
  • Maintains and troubleshoots low voltage PLCs, primarily DC photo eyes
  • Maintains bulk packaging equipment and weighing system
  • Understands basic electrical circuits and testing using voltage and amperage meters

Instrument Technicians are self-directed.
They work with little to no supervision.
They are technical experts in the area of instrumentation, receive little technical guidance from management.
The troubleshooting work is complicated, demanding and has high time pressures.
The nature of the work is becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated, particularly in the area of process automation system troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Post high school education and training is desired.
    Such education and training could include a college or university education (Associate Degree), Trade School, Technical School or Apprenticeship Program.
  • PLC programming experience is preferred.
  • Prior work experience as a maintenance mechanic is strongly preferred (single craft or multi-craft).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Basic process knowledge (pressure, flow, level, temperature).
  • Intermediate instrumentation knowledge and skills (familiarity with test equipment).
  • Strong mathematics background (trigonometry level).
  • Strong reading comprehension.
  • Basic to intermediate level mechanical maintenance skills.
  • Intermediate level pipefitting skills.
  • Strong initiative (able to direct one's work efforts without supervision).
  • Interpersonal/Team Skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication skills - verbal and listening.
